Introducing Creamy Carrot & Ginger Soup!

This is pretty much a combination of a few recipes I found online with additional ingredients that just seemed to make sense to me.

1 - Chop up one medium Onion into small diced pieces

2 - Pour some Olive Oil in a saute pan, heat it up and add the onions, add Garlic, I used about 2 cloves and crushed it into the pan

3 - Take about a pound & a half of Carrots, wash them and slice them into little rounds, like you would do for chicken noodle soup

4 - Add sliced carrots to the pan with the onions and cover, cook on medium until the carrots are soft

5 - Add about a cup and a half of Chicken Stock, (or turkey stock, whatever you have, I used some frozen homemade chicken stock)

6 - Chop up about a table spoon of Fresh Ginger, make sure to shop it as finely as possible and add it to the pot

7 - Chop up 2-3 medium Potatoes, into bite sized pieces, without the skin, and add it to the pot

8 - Because my stock was homemade, it is not as salty as canned and so I added a few shakes of Salt, Pepper and 1 TBS of Rosemary

9 - Continue to cook the soup, covered, for 25-30 minutes so that the potatoes are soft and everything melds together

13 - Once cooked, take the pot off the burner and puree using a blender or one of those cool hand-held blenders wands

14 - Once all of the soup has been blended, add a cup or two of Almond Milk. This is to taste and will dictate the consistency and coloring of your soup

15 - Continue to cook for 5-10 minutes on low to medium, make sure to stir it so it doesn't burn on the bottom

Clearly the measurements are not exact, so adapt as you see fit.
After all those carrots, it didn't even taste too carrot-y, but was a very nice, rich soup, perfect for rainy nights.

Real Food

Alright ladies, I know many of you are struggling with finding good recipes that fit into the fertility diet plan so here are a few recipes that will help for the week:

(leave out the cheese & sub wine for veggie broth)

(leave out the cheese)

(sub almond milk in the place of cream)

(Use bones from your crock-pot chicken)

So good! But cook this on the weekend, it is a long process.
(sub veggie broth for wine)

There are so many good meals out there, they just take time. For those of you that are busy during the week, try batch cooking on the weekends.

Latest FSH

When I say, "here we go again" I really do mean it, as in many ways I feel like I am starting this whole trial all over again. I had some blood work done last month to give me an idea of where my hormones are and answer some of the questions I had about where my fertility is now that I have successfully had a child. I knew something wasn't quite right as my cycles started to become irregular, I had some spotting and those dreaded hot flashes were back.

I was pretty sure my progesterone & estrogen would come back low, which they did. I was also not surprised that my FSH would be high, I was hoping it would be low, under 10, but given my history I knew chances were slim that it would be a low number.

So here is where I am starting:

FSH = 21.6 (Needs to be less than 10)
LH = 21 (Needs to be less than 12)
Progesterone = 0.5 (Needs to be more than 1.0)
Estradiol = 22 (Needs to be between 19-144)

Additionally, I was incredibly low in iron, folate and vitamin b.

So, as you can see, I have a lot of work to do.

Let the journey begin. again.

Here We Go, Again

Well, it has been almost a year & a half since my last post on this blog and as of today, I am back, hoping to post of a regular basis. Let me play a little catch-up on some fairly important items:

1 - Allouette is now 19 months old, 5 months shy of hitting her 2 year mark
2 - I am back in school, working toward a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine
3 - My most recent blood tests revealed that I am once again back in 'ovarian failure'
4 - We are actively trying to get pregnant, have been since I stopped nursing (almost 7 months now)
5 - I have had multiple positive pregnancy tests, both in December & May, these have resulted in loss
6 - It is more clear then ever that Allouette is a true miracle, and I am going to have work for each and every baby I am able to bring into this world
7 - I have been working with quite a few ladies, creating fertility plans for those that, like me, have to fight the good fight to get pregnant

So, welcome back to the journey. May we all find ourselves knocked-up in the year to come!

In Summary

Many people have been asking for me to summarize all that we went through to get to Allouette. I have been working with several support groups for fertility, POF and Mosaic Turner's to give other women hope, and perhaps a plan of attack to tackle their own fertility issues. So I thought I would do one final post on this blog before I move on, to provide a quick version of what we did in hopes that it might help someone else.

I was diagnosed with POF in 2009 and told that the chances of having a child, using my own eggs was less than 1%. My FSH was 48 and raising, I was only 28 years old and was shocked when I was given my diagnosis. My husband and I really wanted to have children, had always planned to have a large family and I just could not believe that I was infertile. We decided to try donor egg IVF, as we were told that would really be our only chance. In 2009, with my sister as my donor, we underwent the procedure. I became pregnant, but unfortunately went through a rather painful miscarriage at 7 weeks. Shortly after the miscarriage our RE started to push us into doing another round of IVF with the remaining embryos from our first go around. I felt pressured, overly pressured and got the distinct feeling that fertility specialists were very money driven, more so than health driven. I decided that I was sick and tired of listening to doctors and fertility experts tell me that I was infertile and should go on the pill to balance my hormones synthetically. I have NEVER felt right about the pill, thought it was dangerous for a woman's system and long term health and had decided long ago that the pill was never an option for me. More than anything I was tired of listening to professionals tell me what to do, even when I felt like my body was telling me to do something different. SO, I decided to take a year and solely listen to my body.

I started researching, reading book after book on fertility, natural diets, ovarian failure, looking for natural ways to balance my hormones with the hope that by balancing I would improve my overall health, and maybe, just maybe, begin cycling on my own. I decided to try anything that felt right and would not harm me, even if it didn't make a lot of sense. I also begin working with my naturopath and gynecologist to run ideas past them to ensure that I was not doing anything to further damage my systems.

It was a difficult road, often times feeling like I was doing all these things for nothing. I worked with an army of more natural doctors/professionals, a nutritionist, DO, energy healer, acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine doctor. I became a modified vegan. I gave up sugar & yeast. I listened to the wonderful insight from my sister-in-law who recommended that I try Chaste Tree Berry & Evening Primrose. And wouldn't you know it, the combination of something I was doing started me cycling again, real periods on an almost regular basis, which I was told would probably never happen again.

My FSH dropped from 48 to 16, perhaps even lower around the time I got pregnant. My hormones started to jump up into the regular levels for someone my age, I lost 15 pounds and overall I started to feel really great.

Then out of nowhere, around the end of May 2010 I started to get major, completely painful & random cramps. Each day they were worse than the day before. I reviewed everything I was doing and started to think that the supplement I was taking, Chaste Tree Berry, may be what was causing them. I was heartbroken and I figured if this was the case, I would need to stop taking it and I was convinced that once I stopped, everything good that was happening to me would stop as well. I held off stopping as long as I could until the cramps became so painful that I would be doubled over in pain, convinced that I was dying.

Finally I stopped, around the 2nd week of June, and once I stopped, strange things started happening. My breast became massively tender, which was never a usual symptom. I started having hot flashes again, NEVER a good sign. And then my period was late. I was convinced that my body was becoming unbalanced and I began researching new natural doctors that specialized in POF. I was even considering flying out to meet with an out-of-state specialist.

On Sunday, June 27th as we were waiting for friends to come and help us load our moving truck I was packing up the bathroom, feeling completely sick, I ran across an old pregnancy test and decided to take it. At this point in my life I have probably taken almost 100 pregnancy tests, 98% of which have ALWAYS been negative but I figured, what the heck, here it is, it will be negative, but I might as well rule it out.

So without saying a word to my husband I took the test....pretty much as soon as I was done 'peeing on the stick' the first line, which is considered the pregnant line, appeared immediately in this dark pink. The test is suppose to take 3-5 minutes and so I was concerned that perhaps the test was broken. I called to my husband, who was massively skeptical and we did a little Internet research. Sure enough, we discovered that the test was most likely correct and I was showing a positive pregnancy test.

10 minutes later our friends arrived to help us move. The last thing we wanted to do was tell anyone as we were certain that it was not a sure thing and the chances were high for a miscarriage. Scared to death to lift anything I pretty much tried to appear busy without really doing very much.

The next day, as the local grocery store opened at 6am I was there at their door waiting to buy a few more pregnancy tests, different brands, to be REALLY sure. All were immediately positive. When my doctor's office opened at 9am I called to speak with the nurse and request blood work to confirm. On Tuesday, June 29th my doctor called back to confirm that I was indeed pregnant, looked to be about 6-7 weeks along and they requested that I go in that very same day for an ultrasound, as everyone was concerned given my medical history.

I was shocked and in tears when the ultrasound revealed the sac, yolk, and a strong heartbeat....all of which I had never really had with my miscarriage. I was given a due date of February 18th, 2011 and didn't realize until a few weeks later that February 18th, 2009 was the exact day we were told that I had POF and would most likely not be able to conceive.

Here is my basic plan of attack:

Removed all processed foods from diet

Changed to a fully organic diet

Became a modified vegan, no animal products except organic eggs and fish

Removed sugar and yeast products from my diet

Did yoga and meditation on a regular basis

Took the following supplements:

Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU daily

EPA/DHA (Fish Oil), 2 capsules, 2xday

Thorne Research, Basic Prenatal, 2 capsules, 3xday

Folbic (Prescription), 1 pill per day

Vitex Extract Plus, Chaste Tree Berry, 1 capsule per day

Evening Primrose Oil, 2 500mg capsules, 2xday (from period to ovulation)

Flax Seed Oil, 1 1000mg capsule, 2xday (from ovulation to period)

I would also track my cycle as it started to come back and become regulated and I would go in for day 3 blood work to see check my hormone and FSH levels.

I am more than happy to talk to anyone interested in trying a natural approach to fertility and hormone regulation. As I sit here, writing this, with my sweet 3 month old baby in my lab, I know with 100% certainty that she would not be here if I had not gone the natural route.

Feel free to contact me if you want to chat fertility and/or natural medicine:

Day 1 - Cloth Diapers

Well, I knew this day would come....we are out of newborn sized disposable diapers and therefore it is time to jump into the world of cloth diapers. I have five different kinds of cloth diapers and decided to start the day with bumgenius as they are the smallest in my supply and this baby is still so tiny.

Allouette now officially has one of the biggest diaper butts around for such a tiny thing.

Wish me the best....keep you posted.

16 Days Old

Oh how time flies.

So, the first week was pretty dang tough, the second week was about a thousand times better, and now as we near the beginning of our third week I am thinking I am starting to get the hang of this whole newborn thing.

Allouette could not be a better baby, she is one happy girl that has pretty much camped out at the breast over the last two weeks. I think we spend 50% of our day napping, 49% nursing and the remaining 1% just hanging out. She really changes so much every single day, it makes me sad to know that as each day passes we will never get it back again. These are the moments.

Both Obie and Boston seem to be adjusting well to the newest Bird addition and while the cat mostly runs away from LuLu, Obie hangs around her constantly wanting to lick her.

After keeping her home for two weeks we plan to get out a little more this week, perhaps hit up the grocery store and make it to church on Sunday. With the weather warming up and the sun shinning it will be good to get out of the house.

Her blessing is scheduled for March 27th and both my parents and Learon's dad will be here to celebrate with us. After many hours searching online, I finally found a little white dress for her to wear and then keep for her future daughter. It was a pretty exciting purchase!

Other than that, life just keeps on marching forward and we are all enjoying the ride.

Allouette Has Arrived!

Well it all started Friday the 18th around 8pm, at which time my usual braxton hicks contractions turned into what you would call 'real contractions'. At first they were coming around 25 minutes apart, so I figured I had plenty of time before the real show would begin. I was unfortunately up all of Friday evening due to both the excitement of the contractions as well as the new level of pain.

By Saturday morning the contractions were 10 minutes apart and so I called into the birth center to let them know what was taking place. They said to keep up the good work, get as much sleep as possible and call back when they were 5 minutes apart. Unfortunately a few hours later they were back up to 25 minutes apart and I began to worry that it might continue this way for days!

By Saturday evening the contractions were back to 10 minutes apart and by 1am we were closer to 6-7 minutes apart. Up to this point, my hypno-birthing training was working pretty well along with hours spent sitting in the shower or in a warm bath, thank goodness for a quick recovering hot water tank!

By 6am on Sunday morning, my contractions were 3-6 minutes apart and I was beginning to question my desire for a natural birth. Thankfully, we were finally at a point to head into the birth center and by the time we arrived, close to 6:30am my contractions were coming on pretty quickly and the need to begin pushing was also starting to kick-in.

Upon arriving they discovered I was 6 cm dilated and 100% effaced, thanks goodness! The midwife on-call, Sarah, began to fill the birthing tub and by 8am I was happily in the birthing tub working through the last few hours of labor. Around 9am I began the 'pushing phase' of labor and Allouette arrived at 10:01am on Sunday, February 20th, 2011.

There were a few hick-ups along the way, and unfortunately I have to tell you that all of my pre-birth work on hypno-birthing only took me so far. By the time Allouette was about to make her debut, I could have punched the hypno-birthing author in the face, given the chance. But looking back on it, I am so very thankful we decided to birth at the birthing center and that I took the scary leap into natural childbirth.

I really can't believe that I did it.

Allouette stayed right on my chest until around noon, during these two hours she had her first chance to breastfeed and cuddle. We were eating our celebratory meal around 12:30, the three of us took a little nap and by around 3pm I was up taking a shower and giving Allouette a mini sponge bath. We made it back home around 6pm.

She is one incredible little baby girl. So far she mainly sleeps and then has these moments of perfect clarity where she will just look at you with big blue/grey eyes, it is hard to believe she is only a day old. I keep looking at her, completely in awe that she is actually mine and that we get to keep her.

Organized!

This weekend was all about installing shelves. Hooray for my incredibly wonderful husband who battled through uncooperative walls and annoying hinges!
As a result, Allouette's shelf is now in place as well as a few in the guest bedroom to house my art supplies.

Feels good to be organized!

Week 39+

Five more days until this baby is due....Dear Allouette, please come on time, the sooner the better!

Week 38+

Here we are at week 38 plus a few days. I also had my midwife appointment today and everything is right on track. Allouette's heart rate was in the 130s, slowing down as we get to the end. I am measuring 37.5 which is now slightly smaller than I should be, shocking considering how large I am feeling.

Additionally, her nursery is pretty close to being complete for the moment. All we are missing is this little red shutter-shelf that is currently drying prior to being hung up above her crib. I would ideally like to get the carpet in her room cleaned prior to her arrival, but as our time is rather limited, I figure it is not really a priority.

There you have it.

My midwife feels like this little girl could arrive at any time, my dad is guessing the 15th and my mom is guessing the 28th (how rude). I figure she will come when she is ready and I am just hoping it is in the next week or so.

Diaper Bags

Yes, to appease my husband who has been asking me to pack him a diaper bag for a few weeks now, I can officially say that I have now packed two diaper bags. I got a checklist online and hope that I have everything I might need.

Calling all you mothers out there, let me know if there is something I should be packing that isn't currently on my list:

•6 diapers
•Baby wipes
•Plastic baggies for soiled clothing and diapers.
•Extra blankets
•Tissues
•Baby bibs
•Burp cloths
•A hat for sun or cold
•Baby toys, books, rattles, etc.
•Pacifiers
•An extra outfit or two for the baby

Thanks!

Week 37+ a few days...

Here we are at week 37, plus a few days. I am officially considered 'full term' and now able to birth at the birth center as long as this little girl makes her debut before I hit 42 weeks.

Things are definitely moving forward, Allouette is moving down, down, down and my Braxton Hicks are beginning to occur on a regular basis. All in all everything is great and we have absolutely no complaints!

We completed our final series of birthing classes last night and after almost 20 odd classes to prepare for her arrival I am feeling very excited and prepared to tackle whatever may come.

I was reminded on Sunday by an acquaintance at church of what an absolute miracle this little girl is. After spending so much time in 'pregnancy mode' I have forgotten how much we have been blessed. I have forgotten that we were told the chances of having our own baby were less than 1% and here we are, so close to having her in our arms and I am in complete awe at how very blessed we are.

Life is really very incredible.

Taking Care of Business

Today was a very productive day in regards to Allouette as I finished up all paperwork due to the birth center this very week:

1) Finished writing up our birth plan which consisted of a lot of "...as this is my first time giving birth I would like to play it by ear......ideally we ask that everyone just go with the flow and be open to all options..."

2) Wrote out directions to our home from the birth center for midwife follow-up visits

3) Completed my research and signed all water birth consent forms

4) Picked our pediatrician, made my orientation appointment and collected all forms for joining the practice

Yeah, that is right, we are knocking those final details off the to-do list. Which is a good thing, as this little girl will make her debut sometime this month!

Dr. Appointment Update

I had a doctor's appointment today at the birth center and everything looks to be in excellent shape. The size of my belly finally caught up to the week, measuring at 37 inches, right where it should be, and I only gained a pound in the last two weeks. :-) Allouette is still heads down and positioned very low, her heartbeat was 140. Three(ish) more weeks and she should be making her debut.

CRAZY!

Week 36+

A little late on the posting, and I have really no excuse except for the fact that the belly is HUGE and posting pictures only to have my mother & sister analyze for possible stretchmarks is a little daunting at the moment.

So I have included a few other fun shots to keep you busy on other items besides possible stretchmarks and swollen fingers.

Obie and Boston loving the nursery and all that wonderful sunshine. It is absolutely the most sunny room in the house.

This is what I woke up to this morning....and I didn't even know it was suppose to snow. It is still going strong and makes me nervous due to the difficulty of driving in all that snow.

A Little Owl Hat...

We purchased this little hat in preparation for Allouette's newborn photo shoot. I couldn't help but show it as we are SO excited to see this little hat on our baby girl! Learon wanted to purchase a black ninja hat, but I am afraid this super cute owl hat won out.

Odd Pregnancy Things...

So a few funky things have been going on with this pregnant body of mine, isolated strictly to my head...which is odd.

Oddity #1
The week of Christmas I started to hear my own heartbeat in my right ear. It was intermediate at first, but now it is pretty much all the time and consists of a whooshing sound along with a squeak. I spoke with my midwife, went to my chiropractor, even went to a local ENT and it has been determined that it is most likely caused by the vast increase of blood flow that comes with being pregnant. It is annoying, to say the least, but everyone seems to be in agreement that it will go away once I have Allouette, so I guess I have to suck it up for 5 more weeks.

Oddity #2
Three days ago I woke up and discovered that my lips were slightly swollen. I was having a difficult time spitting after brushing my teeth and whistling for Obie has become almost impossible. The left bottom lip is the most swollen, and overall it makes eating feel kind of funny. I decided to drink lots and lots of water to see if the swelling would go down....so far no luck.

My blood pressure has always been excellent, so I don't anticipate either of the above issues causing any type of complication, but they are both rather odd if you ask me. Somehow I have by-passed all of the regular pregnancy complaints and have landed straight into the unusual. Typical.

Other than that, I feel great and I am excited to be 35 weeks!

Last Ultrasound

I had a final ultrasound today and everything looks great!

Allouette is currently (roughly) 6 pounds, 4 ounces and has hair! Yes, that is right, our little baby girl, whom I was sure would be born bald as bald could be, actually has hair. Shocking.

Her heart rate was, as always, in the 150s and she is a major mover in there.

So there you go, Allouette is one healthy baby and is right on track to be a nice 8 pound, 4 ounce'r when she is born.

Week 34

Belly shots for Amber:

Yes, the belly is HUGE! Measuring as of today at 36 inches from top to bottom, which is slightly on the large side for 34+ weeks. No stretch marks as of yet, but I figure any day now. The belly button has officially popped out and it is creepy.

I had an appointment today at the birth center and overall she is measuring right on target, still head down with her back on the left side. 6 more weeks to go.....

Chocolate Peanutbutter Ice Cream

It has been determined that this little girl must really love her chocolate peanutbutter ice cream as, as soon as I eat it she starts to go CRAZY in there. Sure, it might just be the sugar kick, but she does seem to respond more to ice cream than anything else.

Enjoy it now kiddo, as ice cream is a short lived item here in the Bird house.

Hello Rocker

I finally found a rocker for under $100, this is officially the last piece of needed furniture for Allouette's room. A big thank you to my grandparents as their Target gift card paid for this sucker.
